I was reading Craig Buckler’s article, Google Reveals Chrome 3 Beta, and thought it was a good review of the latest developments with the Google Chrome browser. What piqued my attention was the final question he posed: “Would you give up your default browser for Chrome?”.
Never Looked Back
I have to say that since the first time I downloaded Chrome it has been my browser of choice. Do I have critiques, absolutely, but when held up against Internet Explorer, Firefox or even Opera it wins hands down.
The latest beta release has improvements that are definitely in the right direction. The new Themes is a nice touch (I am partial to the Minimal theme, big surprise).
Where the Google team has made the most improvements is with the New Tab page. Previously this feature was an unmanageable set of thumbnail links that was driven by your most frequently visited sites. They have now given the user the control needed to set this page up as you choose by pinning thumbnails down. I realize that this is an idea that Opera put forth long ago, but it is nice to finally see the concept maturing in chrome.
If you are not a Chrome user it is important to note that one of the most useful Chrome features is the ability to drag tabs in and out of the browser window (I think this is still unique to Chrome). I use a multiple monitor setup on my development machine and this feature allows me to quickly and easily break apart and then reintegrate my browser into different areas of my desktop.
So, “Would you give up your default browser for Chrome?”. Yes, yes I would.
