One of the very nice features of the Revolution Manager is how customizable it is. It can take a bit of getting used to and because there are hundreds of possible settings it can be overwhelming. Here are some basic tips on configuring a couple of the more common elements of the manager.

Hiding the Manager Tabs

Most of the time, you don’t want your users to see everything in the manager. There are loads of vital settings that if set to the wrong value can bring down a website. There are several ways to hide the tabs and sub-tabs using the ACL permissions however if you want to just hide an entire tab there is a quick way to do this.

  1. In the ACL for the administrator, add a new permission for the tab you want to hide (for example, view_tab_site).
  2. In System -> Actions, right-click on the menu tab you want to hide and choose update.
  3. In the Permission field add the SAME value you added to the administrator ACL. It can be anything you want but should be something descriptive and can’t be a permission already used by the system.
  4. Now the tab will be hidden to all users who are not administrators.

WARNING: If you hide the System tab without adding the permission to the administrator ACL you will effectively NOT be able to see the System tab again. With this in mind you MUST add the permissions to the administrator ACL BEFORE you edit the permissions in the Actions screen.

Controlling the Files Tab

You can control what folders and files the user sees in the Files Tab when they log in. To do this go into the User Manager and edit the user account. In the Settings Tab for the uses click Create New. Add the parameters shown in the screen shot below and replace the Value field with the appropriate path you have set up.

TIP: If you would like each of your users to have a private files folder that only they can see, create a folder under assets with the username and in the settings for that user point it to their folder. Only they (and any administrators with higher privileges) will be able to access those files.

    Hi Crawford,

Is there a way to undo hiding the System tab from the main administrator account (ie if you did exactly what you warned against)?

  • Tom

    Hi Crawford,

I found a fix for this – I had to install Modx on a client server in order to deliver their site, and in the new install I found the direct url extension for the System tab. Entering this in the Modx build where I had accidentally hidden it from the Manager console directed me back to the System settings where I could delete the offending code.

For me, the extension was: /?a=64

If anyone else is looking for this solution hope it helps!

Hi, I haven’t yet tried Revo as Evo still suits my workload but would it be possible to skin the Manager so it appears as the front-end design…like a seamless transition from front-end to back?

There is a new tool called UpFront Editor. It is just alpha, but it looks promising: http://upfront.butter.com.hk/blog/development-updates/27.html
